On social media in February I posted this surreal image by Rene Magritte to express deep frustration about the lack of accountability leading to God knows where. Only a few months later, I notice some brighter signs in this image: the cloud blanket a bit less oppressive, the sky a fairly normal blue, the broken lines slightly brighter. "We're in a global Renaissance of protest around the world," according to scholar Ruth Ben-Ghiat. In this Civil Discourse interview, she points out that, notwithstanding the march to autocracy, there is also a march to freedom taking place. Still somewhat behind the global scenes, but have no doubt, it's happening. Far from becoming relaxed, it's even more important, right now, to keep the pressure on. The points raised in this interview are infuriating but also motivating, toward an indispensable mobilization that's growing.
